Description |
This housing complex was built by the U.S. Maritime Commission and opened in December, 1942. It was essentially a full-service hotel, with 900 single and double rooms in 37 buildings. Some of the buildings were for men only, some for women only, and some were designated for couples. The cost was $5 for a one-week stay for one person, or $8 for two people. There were 50 to 60 chambermaids employed to clean the rooms, all under the direction of a professional housekeeper. There was a restaurant on site that was open 24 hours a day and could seat 200 people. After the war, the buildings were sold and moved. Some to private homeowners and some to the University of Maine at Orono to be used for student housing. |
