Southern Maine Community College |
Description |
The college was originally founded in 1946 in Augusta, known as Maine Vocational Technical Institute (MVTI), to serve returning World War II veterans who needed to learn new skills for employment. In 1952, the college had outgrown its campus in Augusta and moved to the site in South Portland, the former Fort Preble military base that had been decommissioned in 1950. In 1964, as other vocational technical institutes open up around Maine, the school changed its name to Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (SMVTI) and began awarding its first Associate in Applied Science degrees. In 1989, the school changed its name to Southern Maine Technical College (SMTC) after the Maine Legislature changed the name of the state's Vocational Technical Institute System to the Maine Technical College System. In 2003, the college changed its name to Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) after the Maine Legislature established the Maine Community College System to provide affordable post-secondary education as a pathway to the workforce or to a baccalaureate institution. SMCC experienced rapid growth after becoming a community college. In 2011, they added a second campus, the Midcoast Campus in Brunswick, located on the site of the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. The school now offers more than 40 degree and certificate programs at their campuses in South Portland and Brunswick, online, and at satellite locations throughout southern Maine. |
