Cumberland Shipbuilding Company was founded in 1917 by James C. Hamlen. The shipyard with four shipways (for construction of hulls) was located on South Portland's eastern shoreline, directly across from the end of Broadway. A Crandall-type marine railway was also constructed at Cumberland Shipbuilding. An installation plant was constructed on the Portland Rolling Mills property in the Ligonia section of South Portland, where completed hulls were towed to have their machinery and engines installed. Ship launches include: 1918-6-29 - steamship Cumberland (Ferris ship) - keel was laid in January, 1918 1918-8-7 - steamship Falmouth (Ferris ship) - keel was laid on January 16, 1918 1918-10-11 - steamship Belgrade (Ferris ship) - keel was laid on January 23, 1918 1918-10-31 - steamship Lewiston (Ferris ship) - keel was laid on January 30, 1918 1919-4-2 - steamship Orhom (Ferris ship) 1919-5 - steamship Wacolum (Ferris ship) 1919-7-2 - steamship Delmarie (Ferris ship) 1920-1 - an 8th Ferris ship was only 40% completed and they took her apart for the lumber 1920-9 - four-masted schooner James C.
